Scouts Complete RYA Stage 1 Sailing

Over the summer, the Scouts took to the water to focus on gaining some skills in Sailing. Because most had not sailed before, they first had the opportunity to attend a taster session. For everyone that tried it, they were hooked and eager to do more! 13 then went on to train for their RYA Stage 1 qualification.

During their training, they learned how to rig up their dinghies, name the parts of the boat, tie a couple of crucial sailing knots, launching & recovery, steer around a course, what to do when capsizing, use the safety equipment and understand the basic principles of sailing.

“It was extremely fun, I liked learning how to sail. My favourite part was capsizing the boat because we got to swim in the water. I feel very privileged to be part of the team and have that opportunity.”

All successfully passed the course and received RYA certificates and logbooks. When they were asked what they thought of it, the overwhelming response was; “When can we do Stage 2?”
