Very sad news today: Mike Downton – Mars Bar Mike, as he was affectionately known – died this morning in hospital.
Mike was very well known to many of our current and former members and would often be seen at scouting events in the area. He celebrated 60 years in scouting only last year and remained very active in the local community.
He was a special friend to Longham, where for a time he was our Scout Leader, took great interest in everything we were doing, and would regularly visit to present our Chief Scout Awards. He often said that he had a particularly soft spot for us.
Many children knew him not only through his work in scouting but also his involvement with Ferndown Middle School where he was a Governor for many years.
R.I.P. Mike - we will all miss you.
The Scouts had a great time developing their climbing skills. Thank you to the fantastic professional instructors at The Project Climbing Centre. We look forward to seeing you again!
Meet Barbara, a newly-born calf (less than 1 day old) that our Scouts had the honour to name on their hike. She was the first one to be born in the herd this season. Many thanks to the hospitality of Allan's Farm, giving the Scouts this opportunity and fascinating insight into the dairy industry.
When Barbara grows big and strong, she will be making the milk that goes into Barbers cheese that can be found in Sainsbury's.
Does your child want to try a new exciting adventure in 2020? Longham Scout Group have places for girls & boys in Beavers (ages 5¾ - 7) and Cubs (ages 8 - 10½). Contact us to give it a try and find out what it’s like.
Want them to get out more and become more active? Learn new skills? Enjoy a real-life adventure rather than a virtual one with the UK’s largest mixed youth movement? Scouting gives children more confidence, responsibility and a broader set of friends. It helps develop a child’s social skills, encourages self-sufficiency and gives them access to new opportunities, making memories for life.
We provide scouting for boys & girls in Longham, Parley, Ferndown & nearby. Beavers meet on Wednesdays & Fridays, Cubs meet on Thursdays & Fridays and Scouts (ages 10½ - 14) meet on Fridays.
A look back at 2019, a year of water activities and adventure for Longham Scout Group. Here are just some of the highlights. Be prepared for more fun and memorable experiences in 2020…
Well done to all our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts on their great achievements this year. These included a total of 9 Chief Scout’s Bronze Awards, 7 Silver and 5 Gold (the top awards in the respective sections). Additionally, some of our members earned qualifications: Cubs for kayaking and Scouts for sailing. In competitions, the Scouts achieved an amazing result of both 1st and 2nd in the District ‘Order of the Boot’ night hike competition. [ 98 more words ] longhamscouts.org.uk/2019-group-successes/
An aspect of Scouting that applies to all sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and beyond) is to try new things and push yourself. Longham Cubs and Scouts did exactly this with some adventurous activities. This event was particularly useful for the Cubs who were working towards their Adventure Challenge, which is needed for their Chief Scout’s Silver Award. They spent half their time learning Fencing (not the type associated with the Gardening & DIY badges!) and Archery. [ 134 more words ] longhamscouts.org.uk/cubs-scouts-adventurous-activity-day/
