Do you think you have got something to contribute?

We always welcome new content for the website and maybe there is something that you think you could write about.

Why write something?

Writing something for the website can be very satisfying. You get to know that people from all over the world are reading what you are writing. It has in fact made some people on the internet famous for it. After I created a website and submitted a news report, I eventually had news reporters contacting me and I appeared on TV!

Not only from the prestige of getting your work published, there are rewards in the form of badges that can be worked towards with contributing to the site. These include:

You may also have something to say and want people to know about. Maybe there is something that you want people to learn or there is an issue in your local area that you want something done about. You might even simply have a fun game or a piece of artwork that you want everyone to see.

What do I need to know if I am going to contribute something?

Style:
Relax, chill, remember that all you're really doing is talking to your fellow members. Don't feel you have to use special long words when short ones will do, try to be straightforward and conversational. If it helps you to imagine that you're talking on paper then do it. Call a cat, a cat, or a moggy rather than 'an animate animal of the feline persuasion'. Above all, keep it simple and use a spell checker...

News:
The first paragraph should be an overview of the story - if a cow fell on the prime minister in a flower-filled memo and killed him, the first sentence would be along the lines of 'PM killed by cow'. You can fill in the details of stuff like what the cow's name was, what sort of flowers they were, etc, etc, later on. Try and keep things short and sharp and they're more likely to be read. Finally, make sure it really is news. If it's not interesting to the reader, it won't be read.

Features:
Quite often writing a good feature is like making love to a beautiful woman, sorry, like telling a good story. Think about the reader and what he or she wants to know rather than just writing to please yourself. Again, try to keep things simple and conversational.

The first paragraph is really important, if that isn't interesting the reader won't bother with the rest.

Content Policy:
When writing something for this website, you have to make sure you abide by some rules. This is not difficult, but to ensure that there are no legal problems or no one gets upset with what you are writing, we do check what you write before it goes online. Don't be dismayed if something gets changed, it is only to ensure that conforms to these rules. We will however try and keep all the information the same and as close to the original as possible.

You can always submit a rough draft and get it checked, have it talked over and change it yourself if you wish. You can always ask us if you have any questions.

Make sure that when you are writing something, you try to avoid using someone's name. If you do need to put in someone's name, try and use just their first name.

Don't copy something that someone has written on another website, in a book or magazine. Don't copy pictures either. This is just like the rules on copying music.

Don't add any e-mail address that is not in our contacts list and don't give any links to websites that are illegal or contain inappropriate content.

How do I get it from my computer to the website?

If you don't already have a password to the website or don't know how to use it, then speak to a leader.
