Beaver Scouts are the first and youngest Section in the Scouting family, usually between six and eight years old. Here at Longham, we welcome boys and girls from just before their sixth birthday. They can move to the next Section, Cub Scouts, after their eighth birthday. Easily recognised by their distinctive turquoise sweatshirts, Beaver Scouts enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and helping others.
We have two Beaver Scout Colonies:
- Treefellas - Meet on Wednesday evenings from 17:30 to 18:45 during school term (boys only).
- Loggers - Meet on Friday evenings from 16:30 to 17:45 during school term (boys and girls).
2009
In January we had a visitor who told us about Fair Trade Produce. She brought some things along to show us. The only disappointment was that we didn't actually try the biscuits or chocolate!
Rev. Clive Sutcliffe visited us in February. He told us about the Good Samaritan and then we talked about it and thought about how we could be like him. We then visited St. Michael's Church at Colehill to finish our Faith Badge.
During February Half Term holiday we joined the Cubs on a visit to Intech near Winchester. Trying out the experiments was fun for both the Beavers and the Adults. We also went into the planetarium.
In May the Beavers visited Streetwise. Unfortunately Greenwood was unable to attend so GSL and Skip came along.
To complete the Safety Badge we also visited Ferndown Fire Station and Ferndown Police Station during the summer term. While we were at the Fire Station the engine had to go out with its sirens going but we managed to use the hose on the Landrover instead. We tried on helmets and hats at the Police Station. We were able to see 2 police dogs and sit in the back of the van they use when they arrest people. They also showed us how they use the stinger to stop cars.
Towards the end of the summer term our young leader, Rose, organised and ran the programme for the Health and Fitness Badge. This took place over a 3 week period and resulted in many of the Beavers being awarded the badge. Rose also completed a Young Leader module.
We joined in the district Beaver day out to Moors Valley on 4th July. We were there all day and they provided special trains for the Beavers to ride on.
During the summer holidays the Beavers joined the rest of the group on the visit to the jousting at Lulworth Castle. Then later in the holiday to Wessex Fire and Rescue at Sopley.
The older Beavers enjoyed a day of trying out new activities such as abseiling and archery on a district event at Buddens Farm in September.
In the Autumn term Rose organised a walk around Ferndown and we were pleased to be accompanied by Alan a local PCSO.
We enjoyed our experiment with various items to see which would sink or swim. We also learnt that old eggs float and new eggs sink.
We had a fun evening making pictures using leaf printing. We looked at different leaves from different trees and then used the ones with larger veins to put paint on and then press them onto paper to make patterns.
The Beavers have learnt how to fingerspell 'Be Prepared' in sign language. We were pleased to be joined that night by Mike Downton from the district team.
After half term we made delicious mini cheese scones. Yummy!
As part of our Christmas Crafts our new Young Leader, Heather, created door hangers for the Beavers to make. They say on them, "Santa, please stop here," so we shouldn't be forgotten by him when he makes his rounds.
We hope our Beaver parents are happy with the peppermint creams, candy canes and Christmas mobiles which the Beavers made at the end of term.
We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
