What is on offer?
The activities that Scouts do are not regimental, they aren't told what they are going to be doing and when they are going to be doing it. Whatever they do is ultimately their choice.
Air Activities
Air activities in scouting range from high adventure glider flights or parascending to kite making and visits to air fields. Recently, one of our Scouts took to the skies microlighting at Goose 2004 and the Troop went on a visit to Bookajet, the airline enjoyed by David Beckham and other famous people. In the past, various Scouts have taken trial flying lessons.
Land Activities
Land activities are a key part of Scouts. Scouts are encouraged to try new activities and develop their current interests through activities ranging from archery to rock climbing. We believe that by taking part in safe but challenging activities, young people develop new skills and abilities.
Recently the Troop have taken part in Shooting competitions, gone Zorbing and Rock Climbing. Many of these sorts of activities take place on the regular county camp; Goose.
Each year some scouts take part in the tough 'Order of the Boot' competition. Do you have what it takes?
Water Activities
Water activities give Scouts the opportunity to take to the water in a variety of challenging ways. Our Scouts often take to the water in Activities such as power-boating, sailing, canoeing and rafting. This often leads to certification which Scouts can continue to take part in and build upon outside of scouting. Some members of the Troop have gone on to become sailing instructors and scuba divers after finishing scouting.
Our Troop is currently the distirict junior champions at swimming and held various titles in the past!
Technology
Computing, electronics and amateur radio are just three examples of technology experienced by the modern Scout. Every year thousands of Scouts throughout the world learn about each other and make new friends during 'Jamboree-on-the-Air and 'Jamboree-on-the-Internet'. For many young people it is Scouting that often opens the door to a career in technology based industries.
For our Scouts technology is essential. Regular practice with radio enables them to undertake large scale projects such as directing traffic at events and use of GPS has become commonplace in expeditions.
Creativity
Creative activities allow Scouts to express themselves in different ways. Through dance, music, art and craft Scouts are invited to develop their talents or try something new. Creative activities can include circus skills, urban street art, sculpture and photography.
Recently one of our Scouts made a skate video and others have learnt new skills such as juggling, diablo, stilt walking and unicycling.
Nights Away
Nights away are always popular with the troop. In Scouting we pride ourselves on providing quality nights away events. From traditional Scout camping to overnight expeditions and hikes, Scouts are given the opportunity to develop skills and above all have fun!
Our Troop regularly has camps which can be anything from survival and learning what plants are edible to camping in another country and learning axework and tree felling. The ultimate being the world jamboree which our scouts have almost always attended including Thailand 2003, Chili 1999, Holland 1995.
Some of our Scouts have taken these skills to go on to major expeditions to places such as Nepal, Tanzania and America after leaving scouting.
The Association has recently launched a Permit Scheme to continue to ensure that all young people benefit from well organised, high quality nights away.
General Activities
Scouting offers a huge range of activities and events. These range from Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) and Jamboree on the Air (JOTA), both popular activities with an international dimension, to traditional Scout pioneering and map and compass skills.
